
As the COVID-19 crisis has gripped the world, nation and Michigan, more motorists seemingly have become reckless drivers. Minimal road traffic and no traffic jams have led to an abundance of scofflaws who dismiss road law and safety. This is not good news for anybody, especially bicyclists and pedestrians.
In the past month, bicycle traffic has significantly increased likely due to the recent circumstances. That is understandable, especially with lighter road traffic and the warming spring weather. Every year, bicyclists – like all people who drive on the road – must focus on safety. It seems more prudent this year.
A collision with a motor vehicle is the last thing that a bicyclist wants to experience. Without a doubt, you are the one most likely to sustain serious injuries or even die. That is why bicyclists always need to be extra careful in sharing the roads with cars, pickups and SUVs.

In 2017, a total of 21 bicyclists died in traffic accidents in Michigan. With a stronger focus on safety, that number can decrease. Some people bike all year round, but, now, with warmer weather, we will see a lot more bicyclists on the road. Please stay safe.
