October is National Pedestrian Safety Month in Michigan

Unfortunately, pedestrian deaths are at all-time highs in the state of Michigan and across the country. According to a recent report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian deaths increased by 21% in the United States last year. Reportedly, this was the largest annual rise ever recorded. In Michigan, 178 pedestrians lost their lives in 2020, compared to 149 the year before.

National Pedestrian Safety Month

October is notoriously one of the deadliest months for pedestrians. In fact, more Michigan pedestrians have been seriously injured or killed by vehicles in October than in any other month since 2015. There are earlier sunsets in October, which can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. Also, many activities are happening this time of year such as football games and Halloween. Because of this, October has been designated as National Pedestrian Safety Month by the GHSA and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

There are some strategies and precautions that pedestrians can take to increase safety as they walk near roadways. It is imperative to always obey all traffic signals and signs and use sidewalks whenever possible. If no sidewalk is present, pedestrians should walk on the side of the road and face oncoming traffic. If crossing in the middle of a road is necessary, always look in both directions and do not move until there is enough space between vehicles to cross safely. Also, avoid using cell phones or headphones when walking near a roadway.

Unfortunately, there will be a chance for accidents to happen any time pedestrians and vehicles are in close proximity. Those in Michigan who have been injured or suffered the loss of loved ones in pedestrian accidents reserve the right to take legal action and contact an experienced litigator. Damages from a successful lawsuit could help victims and families pay medical expenses and other documented financial losses.
