Watch Your Step: Late Winter Weather’s Contribution to Slip-and-Fall Injuries
March 31st, 2025
If you ever lived in Michigan, you probably know the saying, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.”
Michigan is known for its unpredictable weather, particularly in late winter and early spring. As the weather warms and we begin to put away our boots, hats, and gloves, Mother Nature reminds us that we aren’t out of the woods yet. Ann Arbor has been known to receive snow into early April, and Michanders should remain vigilant about the potential slip-and-fall hazards posed by snow, ice, and freezing conditions. A late winter or early spring frost can result in hazardous conditions that create the risk of a slip and fall injury.
If you were hurt in a slip-and-fall accident, the personal injury attorneys at Muth Law, P.C., can help. With over four decades of experience in personal injury law, our attorneys know Michigan premises liability law inside and out, and we know what it takes to get results.

How to Avoid Slip-and-Fall Injuries
Even though it seems like winter is almost almost over, we must remain vigilant when we walk outside during the late winter and early spring. Protect yourself by taking appropriate precautions whenever you know we will be experiencing low temperatures.
- Watch for Patches of Ice. Ice can appear in different patterns and formations depending on the temperature, humidity, and geography of your location.
- Beware of Black Ice. “Black ice” is a transparent, smooth, thin layer of ice that can form on nearly any surface. Because it is clear, it shows the color of the road surface below and is difficult to see. Black ice creates an extremely hazardous condition when it forms on roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and other areas where people walk.
- Wear Appropriate Footwear. Even though spring is here, choose appropriate footwear anytime the temperature is near or below freezing. Wear boots that will keep your feet warm and provide additional traction on slippery surfaces.
- Use Rock Salt Where Appropriate. If you see ice on the walkways in front of your home, consider spreading rock salt to melt the ice more quickly. Salt also creates a rough, textured surface that reduces the likelihood of slipping for anyone who walks on it.
- Use Handrails. Use handrails when they are available. The purpose of a handrail is to help keep a person upright and prevent a fall.
What To Do If You Were Injured in a Slip and Fall Accident?
Slip and fall accidents can cause a range of injuries, including broken bones, sprains, strains, soft tissue damage, nerve damage, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord damage, and hip fractures. These injuries may require extensive medical treatment and time off work.
If you were injured in a fall on someone else’s property, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, including:
- Financial compensation for past and future medical expenses
- Lost wages if you missed work because of your injuries
